Blog - Composition and Manual Control

1. Frame a CU portrait of a subject. Keep the same framing but take the shot with 2 different focal lengths and move your camera to accommodate the frame size. Describe the differences in the look based on the lens.
  • wide angle lens: In this shot we get more of the scene in the shot. You take in less of the subject and more of everything around. 1/160 F4.5 55mm

  • narrow angle lens: This shot is a lot more personal. We see a lot less of the scene. 1/160 F5.6 18mm

2. Take 3 photos of the same subject from the same camera position by using 3 different focal lengths. Respond to the differences of the image based on the focal lengths.
  • Wide field of view: 55mm 1/160 F5.6

  • Normal field of view: 24mm 1/160 F4.0

  • CU field of view:  18mm 1/160 F3.5

3. Learn to control your exposure. Set your camera to manual. Take 3 photos of the same subject with the same lens and distance but with different exposure settings. Record your settings and how the image changes based on the aperture. The over and under exposure should still have some detail.
  • Good exposure: 1/25 F5.6; the image is a little dark on the right because lack of fill but the photo has an even exposure.

  • Overexposed: 1/100 F5.0; the shutter is held open longer allowing in more light.

  • Underexposed: 1/400 F5.0; The shutter is really quick letting in less light for the sensor making a darker image.

4. Take 2 photos of the same subject with 2 different white balance settings. What different moods or emotions does the color evoke?
Daylight
The lighting was very warm and using the daylight balance made it even warmer. The tone of the whole photo is an orange; almost as if I used a filter.

Tungston
The Tungston white balance gave the image a more green tone. It does seem to be more balanced than the daylight balanced photo

Fluorescent
Out of the white balances I choose this one seems to be the most flattering. The scene is still a little warm but I am going to blame that on the lighting in the room and lack of fill.

5. Design 2 shots of the same subjects – 1 on the x-axis, 1 on the z-axis. Which shot is objective and which is subjective?
Subjective

Objective

6. Take two photos of the same subject - one with wide depth of field and one with shallow depth of field.
Shallow depth of field

Wide depth of field

7. Story: Girl is bored alone at home. She turns on the television but that still doesn't relive the boredom. She finally gets a phone call from a friend who wants to meet up so she leaves.

EXT. Home, natural light coming in from windows – afternoon

Backstory: Michael a shares his home with two woman, all three are in college. They met while working in the service industry together, it is also what created this no boundaries relationship between the three. All people in question are extremely non-heterosexual. They also share the home with two cats.

Michael is laying on the sofa, doing homework but also halfway watching TV. The TV is playing softly in the background while Michael tries to work on his project. Anna comes down the stairs after being up in her room cleaning/putting away laundry.

Anna
What’ch doin Beebe?

Michael
Meh. I should be doing homework but I also found this documentary. Sooooooo nothing.

Did you know I can see your underwear through your leggings?

Anna
yeah, they’re too small. But it doesn’t matter because I’m not leaving the house. Jokes on you sucker.

You wanna come outside and smoke Barbee boy?
(pronounces S with a whistle)

Michael
 Yesh mama.

Michael follows Anna do the door.

Michael
One sec, I forgot my phone.

Michael turns to go back and grab his phone, then walkers back outside, closing the door behind him.

Anna
Hey, can you grab my lighter from the kitchen.

Michael
Erm, no captain, the door seems to be locked…

Anna
 did you lock the door…

Michael
I don’t think so, but I must have. Because the door is locked.

Anna
FUCK

Michael
Where is Marie? Should we call her?

Anna
No, let check the windows.

Anna walks around the side of the house to check the windows,
Michael follows.

Michael
I know you probably don’t want to hear this but I made sure all the windows were locked yesterday…

Anna
Well that’s just great. What should we do?

Michael
Where is Marie?

Anna
She said she was visiting family and would be back at 6.

Michael
Well it’s 4:30 now. Let’s walk to 711 to kill a little time.
I want a soda.

The two walk back around the side of the house and head down the alley to the back of the home. We see that Anna still has on the legging that are slightly too tight and Michael has locked his shoes inside of the house. The two walk down the alley in conversation.

Michael
My feet hurt. The Gravel hurts.

Anna
I’m sorry Beebee.

Michael
How is work? You havn’t talked about that in a while.

Anna
Eh, it’s okay. Nothing much to talk about.

Michael
Last time you had plenty to talk about. Is your boss still giving you a hard time.

Anna
Yeah, but it’s whatever. Part of the job I guess.

Michael
It’s not whatever. You deserve to be treated better.

The two arrive at the 711. Michael realizes that he has no shoes on and that means he can’t go into the store.

Michael
I can’t go inside. I don’t have any shoes on.
Will you buy me something?

Anna
Yeah, What do you want?

Michael
A mountain dew and one of those little taco things.

Anna
Taquitos?

Michael
Yeah, those are the best.

Michael hands a $20 to Anna

Get yourself a soda or something too.

Anna
Okay

Michael
Thanks mama.

Michael stands outside of 711 while Anna takes her time in the gas station. Michael is getting cold outside and people keep looking at him because he has no shoes on. Anna eventually exits the store.

Michael
That took forever.

Anna
The taquitos were still frozen…
I microwaved them but they exploded.
I felt bad so I still bought them.

Anna hands a bag to Michael

Michael
Gross.

Michael takes a bite from the exploded taquito as the
two head back home.

Anna
It’s starting to get cold. I hope Marie shows up soon.

Michael
Yeah the sun is starting to go down.

The two arrive back at the house. Michael checks the windows again, they are all locked, the two sit on the front steps drinking the sodas they just bought.

Michael
Did you check the front porch door?

Anna
I locked it today.

Michael gets up and checks the door.

Michael
Whyyyyyyyyyy.

Michael pounds head against glass.

Anna
That’s not going to help

Michael
I’m cold and I want inside.
It’s 7:00 and Marie still isn’t here.

Michael tackles the front door and it flies open.

Yay, im free.

Michael runs inside. Anna is still sitting on the front steps as Marie pulls into the back of the house. She shakes her head and walks inside the door.

These photos represent the locations that have been chosen for our documentary. The subject of our documentary are the groundskeepers at Notre Dame University, the goal is to showcase the amount of work that goes into keeping the campus grounds looking pristine.

The plan is to shoot the subject either on a park bench on campus or in office; depending on weather. The B-roll will consist of large pans around campus and some hand held stuff showing the work being done on campus. I feel like the campus will offer a lot of pleasing shots.

Project Name: True Landscaping Notre Dame
Completed by: Allen Stenberg
Scout Date & Time: 10/31/16  2:00PM
Location address:
Notre Dame, IN
Campus

Day and time of shoot

Location description (interior/ exterior):
The interview will be either on the park bench outside or inside depending on the weather outdoors. The office supplies good back light, we will have to make sure that the subject is lit well from the front because of the strong light comin in through the back, or place subject closer to the window and shoot close in. The B-roll will all be shot around campus; taking advantage of the playing fields and quads.
Describe the scene and action. How many people are on camera?
One man will be interviewed on camera, the B-roll could show one or two people depending on the work that is being done that day.

How much space is needed?
Office/Campus
Will the action be shot from one or multiple locations?
Action will be shot from multiple locations on the ND campus

Is there off-screen space available?
What are the light levels and sources of light? How does this impact your scene?
Outdoor lighting is dependent on the day, the office supplies decent light from the back windows, I feel like we will still need a couple lights to fill the space.
Are you recording sound? Are there any issues to be aware of?
We will be recording the audio from the interview for voiceover, they have also discussed the introduction of a narrator. I am waiting for the producer to pan that out.
Is there any special equipment needed?
Camera, lights, microphone, tripod, memory chip
Are there any concerns that need to be addressed about shooting at this location?
My only concern would be the time of year and the subject. No one likes looking at wet leaves being blown around. It should be early enough in the season that this wont be an issue.

Hello My Name is X. I’ll be your server

American Server X
In this interview we take a look at one of the most disrespected positions in our country, the underdog if you will. A position where we say; it’s okay that you make less than minimum wage. Its okay to be disrespected; It's all part of the job. Today we look at the American Server.

Server X is a 26-year-old server who works at a steak house in South Bend. She is a hard worker often working five to six days a week. She has a degree in linguistics and education but soon found out after college that it can be hard to find a job in such a tough market. That is how she landed in this Job.

How do you like serving?

What do you think of your pay?

On average how many hours do you work a day? How many of them are spent on your feet running around?

How do you pay for benefits or save for retirement?

What is your favorite part of the job? Why?

What is the most demanding part of the job? Can you explain?

How much of the money that you make do you actually get to keep?

What happens if a table stiffs you or doesn’t leave a tip?

What happens if a table ditches on the bill?

What are the hours like?

Do you think the amount of stress you are under to constantly make a table happy has any effect on your mental health?

What do you do after your shift?
